An impressive winding gorge with many worthwhile sightseeing stops. You can visit the gorge on a day tour (for example from Taipei). However, it is much nicer to combine the tour with an overnight st… Full review by luxuryvoyage

Came here as part of an excursion from a cruise. We walked for about one and a half hours on the Shakadang Trail which was very dramatic, but felt very safe. We also visited the Eternal Spring Shrine… Full review by Anne S

Has anyone booked online/experience the free Outdoor Interpreter service (english) which starts at the Taroko Visitors Centre to Tianxiang? Seems there is a multimedia presentation at this centre & another Landscape of Taroko at the Tianxiang Service Station. Wondering if they are worth attending.

A:
Yes, there is bus service between Hualien and Taroko National Park. We have seen many tourists using it. Check with your hotel on arrival.

Hello, I am planning to go to Taroko National Park in December around Christmas, was going to find a train from Taipei. Did staying in Hualien go OK - or was is super busy/touristy? I wanted to do some all day hikes and sounds like I need a permit as well for that. Are you able to get permits when you get there, or do you know if you should apply on line as well? Thanks

I would rec'd staying in Hualien at least for 1-2 night esp. if you enjoy hiking. Staying in Hualien is a much slower pace than Taipei. It is a small coastal town that relies on tourism, but not overly touristy. It's like visiting San Francisco (Taipei) and Monterey (Hualien); analogy if you're familiar w/ Northern CA bay area. There is a night market where you can get local & aborigine foods; a small downtown (lots of mom & pop shops), in general the food/restaurants are cheaper here vs Taipei. We did not rent a car and relied on taxi's to take us from the train stn to our minsu; and our tour guides to/from Toroko Gorge NP. The only trail in Toroko Gorge NP that requires a permit is the Zhuilu Old Trail. They limit the number of permits per day and you must start the hike no later than 10am (as they don't want hikers to be stranded too late on the trail @ the end of the day). For Zhuilu Old Trail, rec'd that you hire a guide to take you as they will pre-arrange the permit for you and provide you w/ a ride to/from Toroko NP from your hotel in Hualien. This is an all day activity. You can use a 2nd day to hike the shorter trails in Toroko GNP.
