Visited the museum while in the Berkshires. I’m Irish and while I’d heard about him (my dad loved all things American) I never understood the significance of his work on American culture until I saw … Full review by 755SharonB

Questions & answers

Q:
About how many hours would it take to go through everything?
A:
The museum itself, somewhat more than an hour. If yu add on a proper walk around the grounds and a tour of the studio, add another hour.
Q:
Are you allowed to take photographs of the artwork?
A:
Yes, without a flash. I took many photos with my phone.
Q:
Will museum be open Thursday October 18?
A:
I don't see why not, but give them a call if you think it may due to any US holiday.

We will be in the area on a fall foilage trip in October. We will be driving that morning from Lebanon, NH and would like to have lunch before we go to the Norman Rockwell Museum. We were wondering how much time we should allow for the museum. We will be driving to Boston after our museum visit, and would like to get in Boston before dark. Are we planning too much in this day? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

It depends on you. In the basement of the Museum there is a permanent exhibit with 323 Saturday Evening Post Covers illustrated by Rockwell. Upstairs there are a 2-3 rooms with mostly permanent art of his. However, they do add paintings and rotate some. We spent about 2 hours looking at the new exhibition which will also be on for your foliage trip. Seeing the paintings takes less time if you don't read all the accompanying information. If you want to read all the write ups it will take a lot longer as there is a lot of associated reading. Rockwell's studio is also a short walk away from the Museum and is worth a quick trip I would say a minimum of 2 1/2 hours and if you don't tire and can keep focused it would be good to spend more time. A break for lunch there could help you. Also, until mid-October you can buy sandwiches (salads, potato salad, etc.) prepared by the Red Lion Inn at Stockbridge and eat at tables on a large tented patio adjoining the gift shop and overlooking the property. Enjoy your trip.

This was my first visit and I really enjoy Rockwell paintings so we spent at least 4 hours seeing the displays and the studio. There are very interesting write ups beside each painting so that takes some time to read. Also the video is worth viewing and then there is a display of all the magazine covers he did. WE also listened to a presentation of his art. And there is a display of another artist in one room...HB cartoons when we were there. IT all depends how much time you want to spend but a minimum of two hours would be the least I could expect one to give
