    The researchers learned that normal defecation entails a coordinated sequence of events: abdominal expansion, anorectal descent, and increased rectal and anal pressure followed by anal relaxation. In the study, women with defecatory disorders have abnormal coordination, impaired rectal pressurization or anal relaxation.
    Defecation can be totally involuntary, or it may be under voluntary control. Incontinence—the loss of control over the evacuative process—can develop with age; it may also result from surgical, obstetric, spinal, or other bodily injuries or with neurological impairment resulting from diabetes, stroke, or multiple sclerosis.
    Defecation is involuntary from the colon to the internal anal sphincter, where smooth muscles push feces out. However, it is under conscious or subconscious control at the level of the external anal sphincter, which is lined by striated muscles (see Image. Defecation Reflex).
