      Size also matters: hardbacks are bigger than paperbacks, they take up more space in bookshops and are more visible – whether in window displays or on bookshop tables. The hardback is the prop forward of the book world: it bashes its way through a crowded marketplace giving the book/author a foothold before the pacier paperback races through.
      A lighter, cheaper paperback edition will be published next year in both countries. But why do books come out in heavy, expensive hardback format first? The first books were bound with strong, rigid covers. Small print runs made them expensive luxuries. The paperback was pioneered in the 19th century and became popular in continental Europe.
      Almost all were available only as expensive hardbacks on the civilian market, and a few were original compilations made exclusively for the program. The original hardback appeared in mid-2008, and offered a genealogy of this pivotal institution's unsustainable financial and cultural situation.
      Retailing at £45, the hardback is just about affordable for a personal bookshelf in addition to the library, and is a very worthwhile investment. At £60 (hardback only) it is not cheap, but it represents an excellent investment for anyone (including sedimentologists) using thin sections as a research resource.
