Bacterial skin infections can be mild or larger infections that form abscesses. The treatment for mild bacterial skin infections is the application of povidone-iodine cream or Mupirocin anti-bacterial cream for about one week and maintaining adequate hygiene is very necessary. Other remedies are the application of cold compresses. An abscess is a pus-filled painful swelling caused by bacterial infection. Usually, small abscesses burst, drain, and dry up on their own without any complications, within a duration of 1 to 2 weeks. A larger abscess needs to be drained by a procedure called incision and drainage, followed by the application of an antibiotic ointment containing Mupirocin along with gauze dressing for fighting against the infection and faster healing. In severe cases, the course of oral antibiotic drugs may be required.
