A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck south of Charlotte’s airport a few hours after midnight on Monday, according to reports from the U.S. Geological Survey.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the 2.2 magnitude quake happened just before 2:45 a.m. on Monday about 6.5 miles WSW of Charlotte. The quake was about 3 miles deep and is the 12 th recorded earthquake this year in North Carolina. A number of small earthquakes have been recorded in the western part of the state near Bryson City.
