The Houston Zoo announced the newest member of the African giraffe subspecies after the mother gave birth during the weekend. The male Masai giraffe named Tino was born 160 pounds and six feet tall in the facility Saturday morning.

HOUSTON ( KIAH) – Imagine going to your job and there is a surprise waiting as you walk in. That’s what happened to the giraffe caretakers at the Houston Zoo. As they checked on the animals, they found a baby giraffe. Houston Zoo announced the new edition Wednesday morning.

The Houston Zoo celebrated the birth of Tino, a baby Masai giraffe, whose arrival contributes to conservation efforts.

The male Masai giraffe, who currently weighs 160 pounds and stands at an impressive six feet tall, has been named Tino by the Gordy Family, longtime supporters of the zoo. As he matures, Tino could reach a height nearly matching or surpassing his 16-foot-tall father, six-year-old Zawadi.

It's a boy! Houston Zoo received quite a shock on Saturday, April 27th when zookeepers arrived in the morning to find that their pregnant giraffe had given birth! Zookeepers knew that the 9-year-old Masai giraffe was pregnant but didn't know what her delivery date was.
