Right now, bits of rock and ice from Halley’s comet are careening through the atmosphere at top speed, visible from Earth as shooting stars during the Eta Aquarid meteor shower. The Eta Aquarids last from mid-April to late May,

Halley's comet was discovered by Edmund Halley in 1705, but is believed to have been recognized for millennia. It won't be seen again until 2061.

Up to 50 "shooting stars" per hour may be visible in moonless skies as the Eta Aquarid meteor shower peaks Saturday and Sunday (May 4 and 5). The annual shower is linked to debris from Halley's comet.
