Cabin crew taking sudden sick leave have led to flight disruptions at Tata Group budget carrier Air India Express since Tuesday night, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.

Air India Ltd.’s budget carrier canceled almost 30 flights since Tuesday, according to data from tracking company FlightAware, after cabin crew called in sick en masse.

As many as 80 flights were cancelled as a result of a large number of crew members reporting sick at the last moment.

Following the delay and cancellation of more than 90 international and domestic flights due to cabin crew reporting sick, Air India Express' chief executive officer (CEO), Aloke Singh, announced on Wednesday that the airline will reduce its flight operation in the coming days.

CEO Aloke Singh said in a message to employees that he is open to discussion with the cabin crew and that the airline will curtail flights for the next few days to mitigate the disruption. The airline operates around 360 flights per day.

This is the second time in around a month that a Tata Group-owned Air India Express is facing flight disruptions due to crew unavailability.
