Grizzly bears are coming back to Washington’s North Cascades. The National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Thursday a decision to actively restore the animals in the region, where they lived for thousands of years.

The federal government plans to restore grizzly bears to an area of northwest and north-central Washington, where they were largely wiped out "primarily due to direct killing by humans," officials said Thursday.
