Al Shaver, a media honoree in the Hockey Hall of Fame and longtime radio voice of the Minnesota North Stars, has died at the age of 96.

He didn’t follow the Stars to Dallas, instead staying in Minnesota to broadcast to the Gophers for three seasons.

Al Shaver, who had a premier standing among Minnesota sports radio voices, died Monday at 96. He made many friends and called it like he saw it.

MINNEAPOLIS — Allen Shaver, the play-by-play announcer of the Minnesota North Stars for over 20 years, has died at 96 years old. According to an obituary from the Minnesota Wild, Shaver died on Monday in Canada on Vancouver Island, British Columbia following a brief illness.

Shaver worked in many roles during his 48-year broadcasting career but is most commonly known as the voice of the Minnesota North Stars.

The voice of the team for all 26 seasons, Al Shaver moved to Vancouver Island after he retired from broadcasting.

In 48 years he broadcast everything from baseball to football to curling to golf. But for listeners in Minnesota, Al Shaver was the “Voice of Hockey”. The legendary broadcaster has passed away at the age of 96.
