The Detroit Zoo's first-ever baby gorilla has a name: Motema. Pronounced mo-tem-a, the word means "heart" in Lingala. The Bantu language is the official language of the Democratic Republic of Congo where over 2 million people speak it, according to the University of Cambridge Language Center.

Motema -- which translates to “heart” in the Lingala language -- has been selected as the historic baby gorilla’s name.

After over two weeks of voting, the newest western lowland gorilla troop member at the Detroit Zoo has a name. The winning name is Motema (pronounced MO-TEM-A), which means “heart” in Lingala, the Bantu language spoken in several regions of central Africa.

The Detroit Zoo named its first baby gorilla Motema and used a public voting contest, with donations, to support gorilla conservation.

"Baby B" is about to get a name, but it took careful planning and a trade to get the Detroit Zoo's first baby gorilla. Plus the mom needed training.
