Oakland officially got a new mayor Tuesday.The city council formally announced the results of March's special election and then Mayor-elect Barbara Lee was sworn in.Former Congresswoman Barbara Lee is the first Black woman to be mayor of Oakland.

Barbara Lee, Oakland's longtime progressive former congresswoman, was sworn in as the city's 52nd mayor on Tuesday, promising to usher in a new era of progress and unity in an embattled city she has called deeply divided.

Lee promised Oakland residents that as mayor, she will restore hope while addressing challenges like budget deficits and public safety.
