The former FBI informant is accused of stabbing Chauvin 22 times with a makeshift knife in the library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tuscon, a medium-security facility, on Nov. 24. According to The Associated Press,

U.S. officials have charged an Arizona inmate with seriously injuring Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of killing George Floyd, in a prison stabbing attack last week.

The U.S. Attorney's Office identified the alleged perpetrator as 52-year-old John Turscak. He now faces charges of attempted murder, assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon,

Prosecutors also told the Associated Press that Turscak said he would’ve killed Chauvin had correctional officers not responded so promptly. Turscak also reportedly said he chose to attack Chauvin on Black Friday as a reference to the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the “Black Hand” symbol of the Mexican Mafia gang.
