The resignation of Sen. Bob Menendez​ is scheduled to go into effect Tuesday. A jury convicted him on federal bribery charges​ last month.

The 70-year old Menendez was convicted on charges that he used his influence to meddle in three different state and federal criminal investigations to protect the businessmen.

Phil Murphy, was sworn in to the U.S. Senate early Monday evening to temporarily replace former U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, who resigned after being convicted on corruption charges. Helmy was escorted to the swearing-in ceremony by New Jersey’s now-senior senator,

George Helmy, Gov. Murphy's former chief of staff, is now the only Arab American in the U.S. Senate. He'll serve just three months.
