Boeing's and its largest union said on Friday that contract talks will resume on Oct. 7, as both sides seek an agreement to end a strike by around 33,000 of the planemaker's U.S. West Coast factory workers.

NEW YORK (AP) — The union representing Boeing factory workers who are currently on strike in the Pacific Northwest said contract talks “broke off” with the company after their latest bargaining session.

Boeing Co.’s largest union said talks with the planemaker have broken off as the two sides failed to reach a deal to potentially resolve a debilitating strike.

"It’s time for the new CEO to truly engage at the proposal-based level and to take the reins from his subordinates who are fumbling critical decisions like this one," said Brian Bryant, president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers which represents the striking workers.

More than 30,000 Boeing workers have been on strike since 13 September after rejecting a 25% pay rise offer. Union members - who produce planes including the 737 Max and 777 - voted overwhelmingly to reject the offer and back strike action until an agreement could be reached.

Roughly 33,000 Boeing workers have been on strike since Sept. 13. Boeing cut off their healthcare benefits on Sept. 30.

After strikers' healthcare benefits were cut off, the president of the International Association of Machinists (IAM) and Aerospace Workers said Boeing's new leader must be 'truly involved' in reaching a settlement.

Boeing's (NYSE:BA) biggest union said after the aviation giant cut off the health benefits of 33,000 striking workers that new Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg should be engaged in contract negotiations that would end the work stoppage.
