The Boston Red Sox surprised the baseball world this past offseason. Boston had spent years avoiding large contracts. The Red Sox said early in the offseason that things were going to be different and they absolutely were.

In Juan Soto's return to Yankee Stadium, Yankee fans heavily booed the outfielder throughout the Subway Series, which also included the Bleacher Creatures literally turning their backs on him. To respond, Soto saluted the crowd as if they were cheering for his return.

It got to a point that by Sunday, Soto had no interest in doing an agreed-upon in-game interview with ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. According to a report from NJ.com, Soto simply was tired of being asked about Aaron Judge and the move to the Mets.

Soto ultimately signed with the Mets but said the Red Sox made a strong case: "I was surprised how hard they tried."

Soto, who spurned the Yankees for the Mets on a $765 million deal in the offseason, was the subject of a lot of reporting over the past few days, including NJ Advance Media’s Bob Klapisch, who said that Mets officials were “concerned about Soto’s lack of enthusiasm for his new team.”

A day after saying he would address Juan Soto’s effort level with the star right fielder, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza declined to divulge the nature of that meeting or even whether it had taken place.

Although Soto said he was ready for the homecoming, he was shell-shocked by the time Sunday night rolled around. Three sell-out crowds broke him. With only one hit in the Subway Series, Soto couldn’t have picked a worse time to slump. The army of Yankees loyalists crowned him as the new Jose Altuve.

Carlos Mendoza asserted that it's his job as the Mets manager to coach, support and teach Juan Soto in these unfamiliar trials with the Mets.
