A "very active and complex mid-May weather pattern" is settling over states from the central United States through the Mid-Atlantic.

Severe storms are anticipated in the central US, following deadly tornadoes in Kentucky. The National Weather Service warns of diverse weather hazards, including thunderstorms, large hail, and intense heat.

Mid-May is living up to its reputation for severe weather as an active weather pattern brings the threat of strong tornadoes, damaging hail and intense, destructive wind gusts over multiple days.

Much of Oklahoma is at high risk for tornadoes on Monday, but forecasters warned the region could see additional hazards including very large hail, severe winds and flash flooding.

A series of severe thunderstorms packing high winds, hail and tornadoes will progress from the Great Lakes to the Ohio and Tennessee valleys through the end of the week, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.

Tuesday afternoon and evening brings a risk for severe storms as a cold front approaches Alabama from the north. An enhanced risk (level 3/5) for severe weather stretches across northwest Alabama. A slight risk (level 2/5) stretches across the I-20/59 corridor, followed by a marginal risk (level 1/5) across south Alabama.

Storms capable of producing hail larger than golf balls, strong winds and tornadoes are expected in the Great Plains on Sunday and Monday.
