The top aide of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has pleaded with law enforcement to abandon their efforts to detain him over last month’s martial law imposition, as authorities prepared a second attempt to take him into custody.

South Korea's suspended president Yoon Suk Yeol will receive his annual pay rise despite his impeachment for briefly placing the country under martial law, the government has said. Yoon's salary will increase by 3% to 262.6 million won ($179,000; £147,000), in line with the standard for government officials.

The first hearing for South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment trial ended in just four minutes - as Yoon was not in attendance. After the hearing, Yoon's lawyers told media outside the court that they will decide on whether Yoon would attend the next hearing or not after reviewing the circumstances of the evidence request and the methods of evidence verification.
