The justices sent the case back to a lower court to consider whether the Alien Enemies Act can be used to deport immigrants accused of being members of the Venezuelan gang.

The US Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration from using a wartime law to send a group of Venezuelans to a notorious Salvadoran prison, faulting the government for not giving the men adequate notice about its deportation plans.

In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in Texas' Bluebonnet Detention Center "until further order from this court."
