The justices sent the case back to a lower court to consider whether the Alien Enemies Act can be used to deport immigrants accused of being members of the Venezuelan gang.

In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in Texas' Bluebonnet Detention Center "until further order from this court."

The plaintiffs told the Supreme Court that granting the Trump administration's request exposes hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans to deportation to an unsafe country and cost billions.
