Labor groups across Utah will begin gathering signatures on Saturday in hopes of putting a referendum on the 2026 ballot to overturn a new anti-collective bargaining law.

A coalition of labor partners on Wednesday announced the filing of a referendum to overturn HB267, which bans public sector collective bargaining.

Collective bargaining occurs when an employer and a union come together to negotiate a contract for employees. HB267 applies only to public sector labor unions and does not affect the private sector. But on Wednesday, a coalition of labor partners — known as Protect Utah Workers — filed a referendum to overturn the controversial bill.

Teachers, public workers, parents, and Utahns from all walks of life turned out to sign their names and show their disapproval of HB 267.

Various unions representing public sector employees are banding together to form the Protect Utah Workers coalition, made up of teachers, school employees, health workers, firefighters, and more.
