It produces vibrant raspberry red mophead blooms in late spring and then reblooms through fall. These eye-catching blossom clusters are absolutely stunning and perfect for drawing attention next to your patio or gazebo. Like other mophead hydrangeas, you can change the bloom color! Alkaline to somewhat neutral soil will produce the characteristic raspberry red blooms. While acidic soil will produce bright purple flowers. This hydrangea features large, bright green leaves with serrated edges coming to a point on the end. Furthermore, the Summer Crush has waxy cuticles that prevent midday heat melt, which is a common occurrence with some hydrangea breeds. The Summer Crush Hydrangea is naturally compact, with an upright, rounded growth habit. Short internodes measure only a couple of inches between leaves. Therefore, dense foliage is guaranteed, no pruning is required! This Macrophylla hydrangea is deciduous, meaning that it'll go dormant to protect itself from the winter cold. After the first frost, the Summer Crush will lose all its foliage for the duration of winter. Spring will see the triumphant return of fresh foliage and blooms for the new season. The Summer Crush is more cold-hardy than traditional macrophylla hydrangeas. At a mature size between 18-36" H x 18-36" W, there's no doubt you can find a spot for at least one of these beauties somewhere in your landscape! *The Summer Crush Hydrangea is a deciduous/semi-evergreen plant and will go dormant during the winter months. When this plant is ordered during the Fall/Winter expect seasonal foliage decline(discoloration, spots, leaf drop) or the plant to arrive completely dormant.* Endless Summer - Summer Crush Hydrangea Care Hardy from USDA Zones 4-9. Plant in Full Sun to Partial Shade for best results. Several hours of sun in the morning with afternoon shade will support healthy bloom production. Moreover, the Summer Crush can handle more sun than traditional mophead hydrangeas, but all-day sun may result in foliage burning. Well-draining soil is important for avoiding root rot. Water regularly after planting. 2-3 times per week for the first growing season. This will allow the roots to establish deep into the soil, helping to ensure future success. During this time, check the soil around the Summer Crush Hydrangea. If the soil is drying out or remaining soggy, you will need to adjust your watering schedule accordingly. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer in spring, and reapply regularly according to your fertilizer's instructions. A high phosphorus fertilizer will encourage the Summer Crush to produce more blooms. However, over-fertilizing will result in decreased bloom production.
