These old trees are also found as fossils in areas like the badlands of N Dakota. This tree species was thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1944, and is currently listed as a threatened species of the highest level - critically endangered. These trees are very hardy tolerating temperatures as low as -30 F up to 100 F. These redwoods grow quickly with a growth rate of 3-5 feet a year. While they prefer full sun, they will also tolerate partial shade. These trees have lovely fern-like foliage and their trunks can exceed 8 feet in diameter.
