One of the most popular perennials for shade, Hostas add color and texture to the garden. Hosta ground cover plants are a perennial favoriteamong gardeners. Their lush foliage and easy care make them ideal for a low maintenance garden. Despite their almost tropical look, Hostas are hardy clump forming plants and once established, they tolerate almost any soil with good drainage and will grow for years. Grown primarily for their showy foliage, Hostas are low-maintenance perennials. Our Shady Places Hosta Plant Mix is an economical way to fill in shaded areas. The shade-loving plants spread to fill an area fast with broad, beautiful leaves. They're perfect for dressing up north-facing foundations. In the summer, bell-like flowers shoot up and bloom above the foliage. Our choice of varieties. Grows best in full shade to partial shade. Zones 3-9. How to plant: Dig a wide planting hole, as hosta roots can grow to one foot deep and two feet wide. Untangle the plants roots and rest them atop a mound of soil created in the center of the hole. Backfill and water thoroughly. Bare root plants should be soaked for several hours before planting to rehydrate the roots. Where to plant: Generally, hostas prefer to be out of direct sunlight. Most will tolerate morning sun, but need shade during the hottest part of the day. They are often planted beneath trees, but dont like competition from shallow-rooted trees. Soil: Hostas grow best in good loamy soil that is enriched with organic matter, such as compost. Watering: Keep consistently moist. Add mulch to help reduce fluctuations & avoid dry conditions. Water deeply to encourage the roots to grow further down into the soil. Those exposed to more sun will require more water.
