Full Sun (6+ Hours Direct Sunlight)Mature Height 4 - 5 FeetMature Spread 3 - 4 FeetGrowing Zones 4 - 8Why is Sonic Bloom Wine Weigela™ better than any other deep-colored Weigela? Frankly, it's because Sonic Bloom Wine™ is a nonstop-blooming powerhouse of a shrub. The magenta and hot pink flowers continue to form and open from late spring to the first frost of fall. Sonic Bloom has some of the largest bell-shaped flowers of any Weigela and are stunning on the backdrop of fade-resistant, dark wine foliage. Sonic Bloom Wine Weigela™ is deciduous and a slightly later bloomer, making it less susceptible to bud killing by a late frost. This shrub was bred in Michigan and will survive winters down to zone 4 without significant damage. It blooms on either old or new wood, making pruning easy. Weigela florida is an excellent shrub for attracting beneficial insects and pollinators to your garden. Hummingbirds love the color and tubular shape of the flowers, while deer often pass up this shrub for tastier plants. Sonic Bloom Wine Weigela™ CareSonic Bloom Wine™ tolerates partial shade well, but the color of the foliage and heavier blooming require at least 6 hours of full sun exposure. This shrub grows well in a wide range of soil textures and pH levels. Provide about one inch of water a week to help the roots establish quickly. Using a soaker hose or drip irrigation system will make watering more efficient, with less moisture lost to the atmosphere or wet foliage on the plant. Even though Sonic Bloom Weigela is resistant to most diseases, keeping the leaves and flowers dry reduces the risk of disease or pest attacks. Topdress the soil with a granular, slow-release fertilizer for blooming shrubs early in the spring to support nonstop blooming. Pruning can be done at any point in the growing season. Sonic Bloom Wine™ flowers well on either old or new growth. Early in the spring, light prune any winter-damaged branches as the new foliage breaks bud. Cut back any dead, dying, diseased, or diagonally crossing branches to give the shrub an open vase shape. The thick, older branches should be removed every 2-3 years for overall shrub rejuvenation. This will reinvigorate the growth and spur heavy blooming. There is no need to deadhead spent flowers. The shrub is self-cleaning and produces very little seed. Sonic Bloom Wine Weigela™ SpacingWeigela makes an excellent informal hedge for the back of the garden, along a driveway or fence line. The mature height for Sonic Bloom Wine is 4-5 feet, with a narrower spread of 3-4 feet. Place each shrub 40 inches apart on the center when laying out a hedge. Plant Weigela as a specimen shrub with at least a 4-foot radius around it.
